Jo Willcocks – Newton Abbot Racecourse

The existing concourse, bars and tote betting areas had long been neglected, consisting of hard, grey surfaces and finishes.
The whole of this very extensive area has been refurbished, on a very tight budget, to upgrade and improve the customer experience.
Existing lighting had to be retained, but was turned through 90 degrees to reduce the tunnel effect. Existing small, but intrusive columns were clad and made into large circular pillars with poseur tables. Both flooring and furniture laminates were chosen in strong colours to provide maximum impact, and the new bars were formed in curving shapes to soften the overall look.
Generally the area has been completely transformed, providing a warmer, welcoming environment.

Jo Willcocks – The Palace Hotel, Torquay

Formerly the palace of the Bishop of Exeter, this hotel has a long history, which the clients were keen to respect. All refurbishments are carried out to reflect the traditional architecture that is part of the hotels’s character, whilst providing all the necessary services and facilities of a 4 star hotel.
Our work at this hotel includes complete refurbishment of the three main lounges, the reception hall including all the desking and furniture, and the main dining room. Each of these prestigious areas was a major undertaking in its own right, and we had carpets specially woven, hand sewn on site and fitted. We also employed a master decorator to feather marble all the pillars in reception.

Jo Willcocks – Bar Barkers

Bar Bakers is a cocktail and wine bar located in Dartmouth. An existing shop, utility area and back yard has been converted to provide a contemporary main bar, with a glazed and tented relaxation area at the rear.
Slightly out of the centre of the town, it was important that the interior fit out was interesting and exciting enough to encourage customers to take the extra few steps to visit the bar. The building had to be completely gutted, in order to form the new layout. Full conversion plans were drawn up, together with lighting layouts, joinery designs and all required local authority applications.
The result has been a great success, with the owners far exceeding expectations in terms of popularity and business prosperity.

Jo Willcocks – The Deer Park Country Hotel

The Deer Park is an 18th Century country house hotel on the outskirts of Honiton and has reopened its doors following a major refurbishment programme, costing £385,000.

The Hotel has had the whole ground floor upgraded, along with several of the hotel’s bedrooms and bathrooms, just in time for the 2011 season. The hotel was closed for 8 weeks to complete the works.

Jo Willcocks – The Dartmouth Apprentice Gallery

£1 million refurbishment of St. Barnabas Church in Dartmouth to convert it to a commercial training restaurant for socially disadvantaged people. Winner of the Michelmore /Western Morning News award for best regeneration of a heritage building in the South West.
This was a highly challenging project on a listed building that required a thoughtful and empathetic approach. The conversion of an important listed building to a commercially viable business premises, meant that the existing architecture needed to be respected and referred to whilst creating an efficient working environment that could be easily managed by inexperienced staff because of the nature of the occupying business. Uniquely, the site also has a small number of residential units in the rear of the property and the architectural brief required a very clear link to be created between both elements.
